Overview

Seminar 1: Understanding Interculturalism and its relevance to leadership and management; Framework from which interculturalism has emerged and its distinctiveness from multiculturalism, community cohesion, integration and assimilation; The concept of the intercultural city; The relevance of interculturalism to leadership and management and intercultural leadership styles

Seminar 2: Defining and exploring culture and cultural thinking; What is culture?- some definitions; Understanding cultural metaphors; The influence of globalisation on culture-negative and positive; Knowing your own culture to know others; Appreciating multiple identities, including strand-based approach

Seminar 3: Intercultural Competence and its application to the work place; Four models of intercultural competence; Deardorff –Knowledge, skills and attitudes; Bennet’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity –ethno-centrism to ethno-relativism; Intercultural Competence Framework of European Youth work and its link to social justice and discrimination; Assessing Intercultural Competence-a tool for reflection Deardorff; Improving relationships among culturally diverse staff and students
